He originally came up with the idea while preparing a calendar that was to depict various holidays, celebrations, and joyful moments. From ordinary objects associated with childhood and celebrations, he began creating enormous art pieces. And it was Balloon Dog that became one of the most famous works in the entire series. There are five unique versions – blue, purple, orange, red, and yellow. They all look like a giant balloon dog, but in reality, they are made of highly polished stainless steel with a transparent colored finish. They were created between 1994 and 2000.
And that is exactly Koons's joke: it looks like a light, inflated balloon, but it weighs more than a ton.

One of the versions is approximately 3 metres high and 3.6 metres long. Koons even had the individual parts constructed with extraordinary precision so that the metal would mimic all the folds, knots, and bumps of a real balloon on the outside.

And what exactly was he trying to say?
In my opinion, that is the most interesting thing about it. At first glance, it is complete nonsense – a balloon dog from a children's party. But Koons deliberately elevated it to a monumental, perfectly crafted sculpture. For him, it represents joy, childhood, celebration, and optimism.

And another nice thing: Koons deliberately created a huge and permanent object from something that is normally small, cheap, and completely disposable. A balloon lasts a few hours or days, pops, and that's it. His Balloon Dog, on the other hand, is huge, made of metal, and can outlast decades. It is precisely this contrast between disposability and permanence that is one of the essential ideas of the work.

And by the way, Koons didn't invent the balloon dog itself – it had existed long before him as fun at children's parties. Koons, however, did something else: he turned a completely ordinary balloon animal into one of the most famous symbols of contemporary art.

Our decorative polyresin dog has a height of 32 cm, a width of 35 cm, and a depth of 14 cm.

You can also purchase all the merchandise we offer in our online shop at our brick-and-mortar gallery in Bratislava.
