On the edge of the American prairie, where the horizon disappears into the golden grass and the wind can sweep through all four seasons in a single day, sixteen-year-old Maggie lived. Her greatest love was not boys, dresses, or a phone. It was her horse, Red. Maggie received him as a young foal. They grew up together. He knew her moods, he knew her whistle, and he knew when to speed up, even though she never asked him to. Every morning she would go to greet him even before she ate. One August afternoon, however, a storm began to gather over the prairie. Maggie was far from the ranch when the sky suddenly darkened and the wind began to bend the tall grass. Lightning struck in the distance and Red got scared. Maggie fell from the saddle. When she came to, it was already quiet. She lay in the grass, injured and alone. Red was nowhere. They searched for her all night. They found her only the next morning – near an old abandoned corral several kilometers from the ranch. And right there they also found Red. He stood by her. He was injured, tired, and covered in mud, but he did not leave. He guarded her all night. Maggie later claimed that she did not remember how he got to her. Her father, however, said:
“A horse that loves you doesn’t need a map.”
A few years later, Maggie already lived far from the prairie. When she once returned to the old ranch, she found a wooden horse figure in the barn that someone had carved there long ago. She put it on the table. Not as a decoration. As a reminder of her first horse, who showed her at sixteen what it means to be loyal to someone until the very last moment. And since then, that little horse stands at her home. It is not a horse statue. It is a reminder of one who once waited in the grass until his girl woke up.
