Tropea is a painting full of color, movement, and joy of life. At first glance, it captivates with a multitude of colorful fish that seem to have just swam through the painting. On closer inspection, however, the viewer discovers that it is not a classic painting – each fish is individually carved from wood, hand-painted, and three-dimensionally mounted on a wooden base. The entire work is then coated with a transparent resin that seals the surface and creates a characteristic wet surface effect.
The title Tropea refers to the town of the same name in southern Italy. It was precisely when Hanna Paulus was creating this work that her adult daughter was on a trip there. She was thrilled by her stay in Tropea – by the atmosphere of the place, the colors, the people, the sea, and the overall energy she took away from it. And it was precisely this emotion that the artist decided to transfer into her work.
Tropea is therefore not a painting of a specific place. It is rather a painting of the feeling that a person takes away from it. The turquoise sea, the sun, the colors, the movement, and the multitude of fish create a composition that feels lively and optimistic. The fish head in different directions, overlap, and create almost continuous movement – as if one were looking under the surface of the sea.
The contrast between the painted surface and the actual relief of the wooden fish is also very impressive. Thanks to it, the work has a distinct spatial character and changes depending on the angle from which you view it. The resin additionally optically deepens the colors and gives them an intensity that resembles sunlight reflecting off the sea surface.
Tropea is simply a work about joy. About summer energy, colors, the sea, and that pleasant feeling when you take away much more than just photographs from a place – you take away a mood that stays with you for a long time after.
