Ivan Kováčik – Parrots
Multicolour lithograph
Ivan Kováčik's striking multicolour lithograph presents a decoratively composed composition in which the exotic world of parrots meets the motif of a birdcage. The centrally placed ornamental cage creates a contrast with the multitude of brightly coloured birds surrounding it, which seem to transcend its boundaries with their presence.
The artist works with rich colours, detailed drawing, and pronounced ornamentation. The parrots are captured in a multitude of different poses and colour variations, while their dense arrangement creates an almost textile, decorative character of the picture. The delicate drawing structure at the same time allows the details of the feathers, the drawing of the bodies, and individual plant motifs to stand out.
The cage in the centre of the composition can act as a symbol of freedom and its limitation – while one world is enclosed inside, the multitude of birds outside the cage creates an impression of movement, life, and freedom. This contrast gives the work not only decorative value but also a symbolic dimension.
The lithograph appears playful, exotic, and visually very rich. It is suitable for an interior where it can function as a striking standalone element, but at the same time, it also works well in eclectic, classic, or art-oriented spaces.

Species that we can identify fairly reliably
1. Ara arrakos – Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao)
Large red-yellow-blue parrot in the lower left part and a very similar large parrot on the right side. A red body, a yellow patch on the wing, and blue flight feathers are typical for the arrakos.
2. Ara chloropterus – Green-winged Macaw (Ara chloropterus)
There are probably also individuals of this species in the picture. It is similar to the arrakos, but the wing has a distinctly green patch instead of yellow.
3. Ara ararauna – Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna)
Large blue-yellow parrot, especially in the lower left part of the composition. A blue head/back and a yellow lower part of the body are typical.
4. Psittacus erithacus – African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus)
This one is, in my opinion, very easily recognizable – grey feathers, a lighter head, and a characteristic dark beak. There is at least one striking grey individual in the left/middle part of the picture.
5. Cacatua sp. – cockatoo – probably white / sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua sp.)
Large white bird with a pronounced crest in the upper left part. I would be careful with the exact species here – the drawing does not allow me to safely distinguish, for example, the white cockatoo from some related species.
6. Probosciger aterrimus – Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus)
This is a very interesting piece: black parrot with a large black beak and a red patch on the cheek in the left part. That is a very characteristic appearance of the palm cockatoo.
7. Trichoglossus sp. – Lori / multicoloured lori – Trichoglossus sp.
In the upper part, there are several smaller extremely colourful parrots with a combination of green, blue, orange, and red. These very much resemble lorises.
8. Amazona sp. – Amazon parrot – Amazona sp.
Several green parrots with yellow or red patches may belong to the amazons.
