The captain placed the old brass monocular on the table. It was retracted into itself like an ordinary tube, but when he slowly extended it, it clicked quietly into place and gleamed like gold in the lamplight. The leather case smelled of old roads and sea salt.
“Everyone sees the harbor through it,” the captain said. “Only one person will see the killer.”
The detective held the monocular to his eye. On the distant pier, he didn’t notice a figure, but a tiny glint from a silver cufflink. That very glint revealed the man who had been feigning innocence all along.
When he retracted the monocular again and placed it in its leather case, he gave that subtle smile known only to the finest detectives.
“A crime,” he said calmly, “will never escape the eye that knows where to look.”
